Throughout her career, Chanel succeeded in packaging and marketing her own personal attitudes and style, making her a key arbiter of women’s taste throughout the twentieth century. Chanel's new creative director Virginie Viard ushered in a new era for the Parisian house following Lagerfeld's death, focusing on a sleeker, more pared-back sophistication. Where Lagerfeld tended towards the extravagant, Viard often chooses subtler motifs and runway show sets alike. The Spring/Summer 2014 runway was set up to resemble an art gallery, complete with color-swathed dresses.

I wanted to see what the boutique was like without all the celebrity glitz and glamour, so I used a free Monday to head to the store. On the mezzanine, there are two additional fine jewelry salons, one of which is dedicated to private clientele. The way that Andrew Bolton and his team put everything together—their understanding of Karl is really special.

TWEED DE CHANEL COLLECTION

It’s a culmination of what we’ve been doing with all the actresses and all the people in this industry. It’s a full experience that we want to have here for our guests. We’re not coming because of the boutique, but it’s a huge opportunity for us to come and present this collection.

Chanel is opening its first U.S. store dedicated to watches and fine jewelry in the iconic Crown Building on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. The number five of course holds great significance for the luxury house—not only was it founder Gabrielle Chanel’s lucky number, but it remains the name of Chanel’s signature perfume. The store is set to carry fine and high jewelry collections, in addition to watches, and offers shoppers exclusive access to limited-edition launches, early releases, and customization, while showcasing some standout archival pieces. It was then in Biarritz, another city that would soon become in vogue, that she opened her couture house in 1915. She then created N°5 in 1921, the first perfume by a dressmaker, which overturned the codes of perfumery of the era with its trail and refined bottle. In 1937, she herself posed to create advertisements, an innovation and an act of boldness, again...

Chanel's careful curation of its new space — from a custom scent and attentive staff to the shades of gold bathing the property — made it feel comfortable and inviting.

Princess Diana (shown above in 1998) had an extensive collection of Chanel pieces — from classic bags to colorful suits. In 1978, Chanel introduced its very first ready-to-wear collection for the Fall/Winter season. In the years before World War II broke out, Chanel experienced a boom in business with four thousand employees and five boutiques on Rue Cambon in Paris.

Visiting Chanel's watches and fine jewelry boutique is an experience, which you just can't get online. Bottles of Chanel No. 5 were displayed alongside jewelry pieces, some of which aren't for sale. According to W Magazine, several historic Chanel pieces are currently exhibited in the boutique, like the 55.55 necklace. I was reminded of hours spent at museums with priceless art as I took it all in. Marino also looked to Coco Chanel's interior design aesthetic for the store's design, which blended the simplicity of black and white decor with "ornate Venetian mirrors," he said to The Hollywood Reporter.

As an employee showed me around, my eyes were drawn to the jewelry arranged in free-standing cases and glass displays built into the walls of the store's first floor, which was split into three spacious rooms. Marino told The Hollywood Reporter that texture and luxury were crucial to the store's aesthetic. Between the gold detailing and sparkling chandeliers, I felt like I had stepped inside a bottle of Chanel No. 5 as I wandered through the store.

Model Hanne Gaby Odiele walked the pebbled runway for Fall/Winter 2007 wearing an exquisite bejeweled dress and flats. Lagerfeld became increasingly recognized for his larger-than-life sets including this staircase to nowhere from the Spring/Summer 2006 couture collection. Over the years, Chanel's bag line grew beyond just classic silhouettes to include playful options too. The early aughts began with a runway bag inspired by the Rubik's cube.

A nod to '80s punk complete with layered pearl strands and a one-shoulder top on the Fall/Winter 2016 runway. Model Binx Walton wore futuristic sunglasses as part of her layered look on the Spring/Summer 2016 runway. A standout from Fall/Winter 2015's cafe-themed runway was this look featuring an origami-like folding of classic napkins found at the brasserie.

That same year, Chanel launched a travel collection, and under a license contract with Luxottica, introduced a line of sunglasses and eyeglass frames. According to Variety, Spacey Unmasked will feature interviews for the first time with “multiple men” who have had experiences with Spacey. The industry trade noted that the description of the two-part docuseries indicates the men are not connected to Spacey’s 2023 sexual assault trial in the U.K. As I turned to walk back downstairs, a group of shoppers were settling into one of the rooms with an employee, appearing at ease in the luxe space. I didn't know if they were used to being in high-end stores or if the staff just made them feel comfortable, but I could see either being true because the space was somehow both luxurious and inviting. The boutique's distinct scent helped to create the perfume bottle illusion, which an employee told me was unique to the store and couldn't be bought.

On a trip to Scotland in 1924 with the Duke of Westminster, Chanel discovered tweed for the first time; a fabric that would go on to define the brand's iconic suiting. In 1924, a few years after opening her couture house at 31 Rue Cambon in 1918, Chanel is asked to create the costumes for the ballet "Le Train Bleu" (above). Others involved in the project include Jean Cocteau, who wrote the libretto, and Pablo Picasso, who created the stage curtain. 1978 saw the launch of the first non-couture, prêt-à-porter line and worldwide distribution of accessories. If you’re on the celeb-spotting hunt, the Four Seasons in Georgetown is a good place to start. The hotel (complete with a “Royal suite” outfitted with bullet-proof glass and a private entrance) is a longtime favorite for visiting stars, and has hosted prior WHCD guests like Angelina Jolie and Owen Wilson.

The Spring/Summer 2015 Chanel catwalk included a finale protest complete with signs and model Cara Delevingne wielding a loudspeaker. Seeing double in 2013 with Chanel's matching Spring/Summer couture brides and Hudson Kroenig a mini muse , a fixture on Chanel's runways. For Chanel's 2007 cruise collection, models emerged from a logo-bedecked airplane and onto a tarmac in Santa Monica, California.
